10 Things to Do as Soon as You Get Engaged

The question has been popped, and you said yes! Hooray! Congratulations on your engagement. I’m so happy and excited for you! You’re probably feeling a whole range of emotions right now. Elation, of course, but maybe also a bit of worry about where to get started with planning your wedding in Berkshire or elsewhere. But before you throw yourself into the wedding planning whirlwind – and trust me, it is a whirlwind! – there are a few immediate to dos to take care of first. As a local wedding planner, this is something brides-to-be often ask me. So read on for my top 10 things to do as soon as you get engaged!

Share the news.

Maybe you want to start spreading word of your engagement the minute the ring is on your finger. Maybe you want to keep it to yourselves for a while (what a delicious little secret!). But when you do decide to spread the news, start with your parents, immediate family and closest friends before taking to social media with a ring selfie.

Celebrate!

How you celebrate your engagement is really up to you, whether it’s an intimate dinner, impromptu drinks, or a big engagement party. (Or maybe all of the above!) I personally love any excuse for a party (no wonder I became a party planner!) but there really is no right or wrong way to celebrate. Just ensure you enjoy this special time together!

Spoil yourself with a manicure.

Your hands will be in the spotlight for the next few weeks while friends and colleagues take a look at the ring. So why not take the opportunity to treat yourself to a lovely manicure? Better yet, book a mani sesh with your mum, sister or besties for some fun post-engagement bonding.

Have the rings sized and insured.

Not the most exciting wedding planning task, but make sure you have your ring properly sized and insured as soon as possible after your engagement. The last thing you want is to find yourself wishing you had!

Think about a date.

The first question people will ask is “when’s the big day?”, so it’s a good idea to have some kind of answer (even if it’s just a month or season). Plus, the best wedding venues in Berkshire and beyond get booked up well in advance, so the sooner you can get the ball rolling with this aspect of wedding planning, the better.

Think about your budget.

In the same way, it’s important to agree on a budget early on in the wedding planning process. This number will affect every other decision, so set your financial parameters and create a tracking system for spending and estimates right from the start.

Hire a wedding planner.

Wedding planning takes many hours and can be extremely stressful and overwhelming. So why not take the pressure off yourselves and make the whole process fun? A wedding planner can save you time and money, but most importantly, they’ll take the logistics off your hands, so you can focus on the fun stuff!

Gather inspiration.

While you want to hold off going too far down the Pinterest rabbit hole for a while, it’s always fun to buy a few magazines or check out a few wedding blogs. Don’t think about it too much, but tear out or save the images that really appeal to you. That way, you’ll be able to approach your wedding planner with ideas of what you might love.

Figure out your priorities.

Before you get down to the real business of wedding planning, talk about the big picture. What does a wedding mean to you? What is most important to each of you? It might be the food, music, décor, dress, or maybe just spending as much time with family and friends as possible. Agree on your top 3 priorities together, and let the rest of your choices flow from there.

Enjoy it!

Don’t lose sight of the most important thing: your marriage. Schedule wedding planning-free date nights or getaways, and make sure to find the time to chill out and reconnect regularly. Your engagement is such a special time, so make sure you take time out to enjoy it!
