Marquee Weddings – seven top tips for Marquee Decoration from Berkshire Wedding Planner.

Decorating a marquee for a wedding or party is such an exciting experience but I understand it can also be overwhelming when there are so many options. A wedding marquee venue is a great way to create a luxury outdoor event alongside warmth and comfort inside.  The benefit of a marquee is that you are starting from a complete blank canvas, meaning that everything from the size, colour, shape, style and marquee decoration can be completely unique to you.

As a luxury wedding marquee planner I have outlined some of my seven top tips and ideas to help inspire you for your own wedding plans and make your marquee decoration a little easier.

Keep it simple with your marquee decoration.

We all know the expression “less is more”! Flowers, bunting, ribbons, drapes, lights… you name it there are plenty of ways to decorate a marquee wedding but sometimes where there is too much going on it can be a little overpowering!!

Firstly, think of the size and don’t try to fit too much into a small space. The benefit of a having a marquee is that you can choose how big or small you want – you do not get this with a venue!

Stripping things back and keeping it simple can make a marquee wedding look very classy and allows you to focus on the important details. This does not mean it has to be boring!

Make use of the ceiling in your marquee decoration

Whether you open it up completely, hang chandeliers or candelabras from it or cover it in fairy lights, the ceiling of a marquee is just another aspect of your wedding marquee decoration.

Marquees can be quite high, so think about creating height and drama with your table decorations to give the illusion of a lower ceiling. Combine high and low arrangements to add interest and keep the taller displays thin so guests can still talk across the table.

Also think about hanging decorations from the ceiling to make it pretty and will will help to draw the eye upwards. Think of stunning large colourful floral displays of flowers such as hydrangeas finished off with greenery hung from traditional marquee poles or large circular floral hanging hoops will allow for drama and stunning effects high up.

How to use colour in your marquee decoration.

While we all love elegant weddings with soft and neutral hues, there is something said for pops of colours while still oozing luxury and elegance.

Using colour allows for many opportunities to inject your personality without restriction and to have fun with your wedding from the flowers, to the stationery, the glasswear, plates and napkins and to the table decorations and even furniture.

Using light colours, such as white, is a good way to brighten a marquee wedding venue and make it look more spacious. You can add pops of colour in various places, through using flowers and ribbons or even balloons to decorate the marquee.

Different colours can represent certain moods, for instance, people often interpret yellow as a happy colour and red or pink can be associated with love. It is important to choose colours that you like but if you want to keep with the same theme throughout, then try not to overdo it with too many colours.

Table decorations for your marquee decoration.

When planning marquee decoraton, the table centrepiece is usually a big focus. It is the core attraction of each table where family members and friends will sit throughout the celebration.

Flower displays are popular when decorating the centrepieces and often, using similar flowers to the bride’s bouquet or following a colour theme will add elegance to the overall marquee styling.

Alternatively, candles can make the centrepiece cosy and romantic, which is perfect for the evening. Or if you can’t decide, perhaps you could combine flowers and candles to make the table decorations.

Have you thought about a funky floor?

Some marquees come with a floor, some do not.  Depending on the time of year, a grass floor can help to add texture or use coconut matting.  In cooler months, carpet can add a pop of colour and make your reception space feel warmer and more luxurious.

A dance floor will often become the focal point of any event whether it is a wedding or party and there is a vase choice out.  Classic wooden parquet compliments many themes.  Distinctive black and white chequer board is eye catching and dramatic especially against a white interior.  A mirror dance floor will create a stir and a twinkling LED starlight floor will create a beautiful visual night club effect.  Or go all out and create a wow with a full-on LED colour changing and video effect floor

How to use lighting in your marquee.

This may sound basic, but lighting can make a big difference to the atmosphere inside your marquee wedding.

The amazing thing about lighting a marquee is that you can use as much or as little natural light as you choose. You could place windows around the entire marquee to let in the natural daylight, which is also a bonus if you’re located in a picturesque location.

Fairy lights can make anywhere look magical, so why not scale-up and hang fairy lights all around your venue or use them to draw attention to certain details within the marquee.

A popular trend for marquee decoration is to cover the ceiling of the marquee in tiny LED lights in a dark cloth to create the illusion of a starry sky. Or what about bringing the outdoors in with a clear span marquee and light up tress and surrounding features with lights.

Remember, it is also important to consider how the lighting will change from daytime to evening.

How to use furniture in your marquee decoration.

Furniture and the layout are an important aspect to consider when designing your marquee and the decoration.  The choice of tables and the best configuration to suit the numbers is an important aspect with a huge selection of round, square and long banqueting tables available.  The choice of chair can create quite a difference to the overall look of your marquee decoration.

There are many beautiful ways how to style the chairs at your wedding or party and it is a brilliant way to add a little style and personality to your wedding decoration.  Use lush florals or hand-painted signs or tie ribbons to the back of chairs. Make chairs more comfortable with coloured cushions on each seat.

Add a chill-out area to your marquee where your guests can relax.  This is really where you can put your own stamp on the styling.  Contemporary sofas and chairs illuminated with tiny lights will look spectacular. For a vintage look, select some mismatched furniture from local auctions.  (These can be sold after the wedding, too, recouping some of your costs).
