Frequently asked questions about my marquee wedding planner services

Is a marquee wedding harder to plan than a venue wedding?

It can sometimes feel harder at first, as you are essentially building a venue from scratch rather than stepping into an existing space. But with a good wedding planner and the right people around you it is totally management. It just needs more coordination and thought. You can read more in my guide on ‘what to decide when planning a marquee wedding’

How far in advance should you start planning a marquee wedding?

Ideally 12–18 months ahead, as key suppliers that are essential such as marquees, power equipment, caterers and florists can get booked up quite in advance. Shorter timelines can work with a clear plan and realistic expectations that you may not always be able to book your preferred suppliers on a short lead time.

Are marquee weddings more expensive than traditional venues?

Marquee weddings don’t need to be but they often do because of hidden costs, as you are bringing everything in yourself rather than paying one venue fee. I work very carefully with couples to ensure that spending is understood and kept within the budget. The upside of a marquee wedding is the complete flexibility they can give you and you can prioritise what matters most to you and spend carefully. You can read more advice about marquee wedding vs wedding venue in my guide here.

Do we need planning permission for a marquee wedding at home?

Usually no. As long as the marquee is up for a temporary period of time (less than 28 days) and is for private use then planning permission is not needed. However, if you are selling alcohol, hosting live music or are in a restricted area such as a garden of a listed building you may need to obtain a Temporary Event Notice from your local council.

What does a marquee wedding planner actually manage on the day?

On the wedding day, I’m there to quietly manage everything behind the scenes so you don’t have to. I oversee the suppliers arrivals and set-up, manage the running order of the day and ensure that everyone knows where they need to be and when.
For marquee weddings, this often includes coordinating the marquee team, caterers, florists, furniture hire, power, loos and bar set-up, as well as managing timings for the ceremony, drinks reception and dinner. If anything unexpected crops up, I handle it calmly and discreetly so the day runs smoothly. I take care of the logistics so you can fully focus on your day and enjoy every moment.

Can marquee weddings still feel elegant and well organised?

I would say absolutely. When the time and thought is put into the planning they can feel incredibly polished and elegant. I spend a lot of time with couples designing and considering the look of a marquee including the furniture, lighting, textures, scents and feel. It’s a bit like a mini interior design project!
