Nunwell House wedding venue: An Isle of Wight Wedding Planner’s guide to this historic gem

When couples ask me about Isle of Wight wedding venues that offer genuine privacy, breathtaking views and a home-from-home atmosphere, a Nunwell House wedding has it all. As an Isle of Wight wedding planner, I’ve had the privilege of working with this exceptional venue, and there’s something truly magical about this classical English country house that sets it apart.

Discovering Nunwell House – first impressions

Nunwell House is a stunningly beautiful country house with gorgeous romantic gardens ranging from formal lawns to wildflower bed areas and an enchanting walled garden, all with views towards the coast and sea. The architecture spans 500 years of history, having welcomed Charles I, Charles II and Edward VIII when he was Prince of Wales. Set in 7 acres of gentle, romantic gardens surrounded by historic parkland, it boasts probably one of the best views on the Island, looking over Brading, Bembridge Harbour and towards the Solent.

What makes a Nunwell House wedding special

Nunwell House is not a busy wedding venue. The family only hosts a select number of weddings each year, and because it’s very much still a family home, it feels incredibly welcoming. This isn’t just a venue; it’s a country home setting that becomes yours for your wedding day.

What really sets a Nunwell House wedding apart from other Isle of Wight wedding venues is that they operate on a hire-only basis. There are no packages or set formulas here. Couples are free to shape their weekend exactly as they wish, supported by a trusted list of local suppliers who understand the house and grounds intimately. This home-from-home atmosphere is rare and ideal for couples seeking privacy, flexibility and the feeling that the house truly belongs to them for their celebration.

Nunwell House & it’s beautiful spaces

The Loggia at Nunwell House

The Loggia is always high on the list of favourite spaces and it’s easy to see why. You can’t escape the prettiness and romance of it. It naturally feels as though it was created for wedding ceremonies. Guests usually arrive and can be directed to this area if the ceremony is happening at Nunwell. Couples can also choose to get married in one of the local churches in Seaview, Bembridge or St Helens and then arrive at Nunwell for the reception.

Drinks and canapés are most often served on the front terrace and lawns, where guests can relax with gentle music playing and enjoy the spectacular views. The atmosphere is welcoming and unhurried. The unspoilt views towards Bembridge, with the house rising behind, create a fabulous backdrop. Many couples include lawn games such as croquet or mini golf.

The Front Terraced Lawns at Nunwell House

If there’s a marquee on the lower lawn, guests move there for the wedding breakfast and speeches. For smaller weddings, dining often takes place inside the house. The day naturally progresses into evening celebrations, with dancing and entertainment either in the marquee or house. After the formalities, many couples take a moment to break away by going up the lavender steps to catch their breath before rejoining their guests.

Indoor Spaces and Marquee Weddings at Nunwell House

The house has stunning rooms for intimate ceremonies or smaller weddings accommodating up to 60 for a sit-down dinner or 120 for a standing reception. For larger celebrations, the lower lawn is perfect for marquees with amazing views and countryside surrounding it. Coast and Country, a marquee company based on the island, offer a range of marquee styles that work beautifully within the setting.

Complete flexibility for your Nunwell House wedding

Nunwell House is totally flexible. Because couples hire the house for the weekend, you can truly create a home-from-home environment and shape your celebration exactly as you wish. No two weddings are the same here, it’s a blank canvas.

Marquee weddings work particularly beautifully at Nunwell, meaning layouts, lighting and furniture placement can all be tailored to suit your vision. The house has seen so many different themes over the years, from traditional elegance to colourful, vibrant celebrations. Very little decoration is needed in the gardens themselves, so styling tends to focus on the marquee or interior spaces, allowing you to make the day distinctly yours.

The traditional summer celebration with classic simplicity – very Jane Austen – suits the house most naturally. As a heritage building, the beauty lies in the architecture itself and the romantic gardens.

However, because of the flexibility of using both the house and gardens, a Nunwell House wedding can also lend itself to creating celebrations full of colour, fun and vibrancy amongst the more natural, wild side of the gardens and countryside. Quite often the adage ‘less is more’ really does apply, and the team are wonderful at helping couples focus on what truly matters to them.

Every wedding at Nunwell leaves its mark in a different way. Because they only host a few weddings each year, those marks are remembered and become part of the life and story of Nunwell.

Working with Nunwell House as an Isle of Wight Wedding Planner

While Nunwell operates on a hire-only basis, the family and team are wonderfully supportive and kind. They organise a couple of meetings with couples to walk through the day, help develop ideas by sharing their experience and ensure all aspects are considered.

The team aren’t planners themselves, so they do ask that couples have some support with regards to [wedding planning and on-the-day coordination](LINK: wedding planning services).

Even though weddings may appear seamless on the surface, it’s having the right team of suppliers in place that allows couples to focus on themselves and their guests to truly enjoy the special day.
