One of the first questions couples often ask me is: “Do we need a wedding planner or just an on-the-day coordinator?”
The truth is, both roles are about helping you relax and enjoy your day, but in very different ways. Some couples want support from the very first idea to the last dance, while others love the planning but just don’t want to be the ones checking the clock or hitting play on the music. Let me explain the difference so you can work out what feels right for you.

A Simple Way to Understand the Difference
Here’s how I usually put it:
- A wedding planner helps you create the day.
- An on-the-day wedding coordinator helps you enjoy it.
Neither is better than the other, it’s all about what you need and when you need it.
What I Do as a Wedding Planner
As your wedding planner, I’m with you from the start, sometimes 12 to 18 months before the wedding. We’ll work together on everything:
- Creating your vision (even if you don’t know what that looks like yet).
- Sourcing suppliers you’ll love.
- Sorting out budgets and timelines.
- Talking through design details, family dynamics, and all those things that keep couples awake at night.
I’m also just at the end of the phone or WhatsApp whenever a question pops up. Think of me as part project manager, part creative sounding board, and part friend in your corner. The bonus? You get your evenings and weekends back instead of falling down Google rabbit holes.
If you’re just starting out and already feeling a bit overwhelmed, full planning is probably what you need. Here’s why hiring a wedding planner is one of the best decisions you’ll ever make.

What I Do as an On-the-Day Coordinator
Despite the name, I don’t just turn up on the morning of your wedding and hope for the best. I usually come on board about 4–6 weeks before the big day so I can:
- Go through your plans in detail.
- Check in with all your suppliers.
- Build a timeline that makes sense.
- Spot any gaps you might have missed.
On the day itself, I’m the calm behind the scenes welcoming suppliers, keeping everything running smoothly, solving little hiccups before you even know they’ve happened. You get to be the couple soaking it all in, not the ones running the show.
If you’ve planned everything but don’t want to spend your wedding directing suppliers or checking timings, this one’s for you.
And if you’re planning a marquee wedding at home, an on-the-day coordinator is worth their weight in gold.

How Much Time We Spend Together
- Planning: We’re in touch for a year or more. I’m there for every decision, every wobble, every “is this crazy?” moment.
- Coordination: We’ll work closely for around six weeks, then I’ll be by your side for about 12 hours on the wedding day itself.

Couples Are Often Surprised…
- …by how much goes into coordination. It’s not just me turning up with a clipboard, I’ll have spent days on prep before I even arrive.
- …by how involved planning is. From marquee layouts to budget spreadsheets, I’m in it with you, supporting not just you but also your family and guests when questions crop up.

Happy Couple Stories
- As a wedding planner: One of my favourite couples were planning a marquee wedding at home in the Cotswolds. They were daunted by all the logistics like power, toilets, lighting, multiple events and they both had full-on jobs. I handled it all, kept them updated when they had time, and helped them see their vision come to life. (If you’re at this stage, here’s what to consider when choosing a wedding marquee).
- As an on the day coordinator: Another lovely couple had done all the planning themselves, but they really didn’t want their mums running around on the day. I stepped in to coordinate, and everyone was able to just enjoy the moment. The mums cried happy tears, not exhausted ones.
Clearing Up a Few Myths
- “A planner will take over and make it their wedding.” – Not true. My job is to bring your vision to life, not mine. I’m here to support you, not to control things.
- “A coordinator just turns up on the day.” – Also not true. By the time I arrive, I’ve already spent weeks making sure I know your wedding inside out.
- “It’s just an added expense.” – In reality, both services save you time, stress, and often money. I know which suppliers will suit your style and budget, and I can often spot problems long before they happen.

Which Service Do You Need?
Here’s a good way to think about it:
- Do you feel excited about planning your wedding, or overwhelmed by it?
- Do you want someone with you from the beginning, or just to bring everything together at the end?
- How much time do you really want to give to wedding planning?
There’s no wrong answer, it’s about choosing the kind of support that feels right for you. And if you’re unsure, we can always have a chat and work it out together.
Every couple I’ve worked with, whether for a year or just the final few weeks, has told me afterwards they don’t know how they’d have managed without me. And that’s the point. With the right support, you’re not stressed, you’re not clock-watching, you’re simply there, soaking it all in.
And that, truly, is what makes it unforgettable.
