Marquee Decoration: Seven Top Tips For A Beautiful Marquee Wedding

In this blog I share my seven top tips for decorating a marquee wedding beautifully. I cover how to keep your styling cohesive without overdoing it, how to make the most of the ceiling height, how to use colour confidently, what to consider for table centrepieces, which flooring options work best, how lighting transforms a marquee from day to evening, and how furniture and layout choices affect the overall feel of your celebration.

Decorating a marquee is one of the most exciting parts of wedding planning. It is also the stage that can feel a little overwhelming when you are faced with a completely blank canvas.

A marquee gives you the freedom to design a celebration that feels personal and beautifully connected to the garden or grounds around you. You are not limited by the size or style of a building, which is why so many of my couples choose a marquee at home across Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Wiltshire, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

As a wedding planner and stylist with a background in interior design, here are my seven top tips for elegant and practical marquee decoration that lifts the whole celebration.

Is a Marquee Wedding Right for You Before You Start Decorating?

Before diving into decoration ideas, it’s worth making sure a marquee wedding is the right choice for your celebration. I’ve written an honest guide that covers exactly this: Is a Marquee Wedding Right for You?

If you’re already committed, continue reading.

1. Keep Your Marquee Decoration Cohesive

The biggest mistake I see with marquee decoration isn’t too little, it’s too much. Flowers, bunting, ribbons, drapes, lights: there are so many wonderful ways to decorate a marquee wedding that it can be tempting to include everything you love. But when there’s too much going on, the overall effect can feel overwhelming rather than beautiful.

Start by choosing a clear direction. What feeling do you want guests to have when they walk in? Romantic and candlelit? Fresh and garden-inspired? Bold and colourful? Once you have that anchor, every decoration decision becomes easier because you’re asking “does this fit the feeling?” rather than “do I like this?”

Keeping things cohesive also means thinking about the whole space rather than individual elements. The flowers, the linen, the crockery, the stationery and the lighting should all feel like they belong together. A marquee with a strong, clear design direction always looks more considered and more beautiful than one where lots of lovely individual things have been put together without a unifying thread.

2. How to Make the Most of Your Marquee Ceiling

The ceiling is one of the most underused elements of marquee decoration and one of the most transformative. Whether you leave it open and airy, hang chandeliers or candelabras from it, or cover it in fairy lights, the ceiling is a huge part of what makes a marquee feel special.

Marquees can be quite high, so it’s worth thinking about how to bring the eye up without making the space feel cold or vast. Large floral hanging installations work beautifully, particularly clusters of hydrangeas or seasonal blooms finished with trailing greenery. Circular floral hoops hung at different heights create real drama. Lengths of draped fabric softened with fairy lights can transform a plain white ceiling into something genuinely beautiful.

Think carefully about proportion too. If you’re adding height to the ceiling through hanging decorations, balance this with a mix of high and low arrangements on the tables below so the whole space feels considered rather than top-heavy.

3. Which Flooring Works Best for a Marquee Wedding?

Flooring is one of those practical decisions that has a significant impact on how your marquee looks and feels, and it’s worth thinking through carefully.

Some marquees come with a built-in floor and some don’t. On dry summer ground, natural grass can be a lovely option, particularly for a relaxed garden feel. Coir matting adds texture and warmth without completely covering the ground. In cooler or wetter months, a proper hard floor is essential for keeping guests comfortable and the space feeling luxurious.

Carpet adds warmth and colour, and is particularly effective for autumn and winter marquee weddings where you want the space to feel cosy rather than cold.

The dance floor deserves special attention as it often becomes the focal point of the evening. Classic wooden parquet suits almost any style and looks beautiful in photographs. Black and white chequerboard is bold and dramatic, particularly against a white marquee interior. For something more theatrical, a mirrored floor creates a striking visual effect, and an LED starlight or colour-changing floor makes a real statement for the evening.

4. What Are the Best Marquee Table Decoration Ideas?

The table centrepiece is usually the focal point of marquee decoration and deserves proper thought. These are the details your guests will be sitting alongside for several hours, so they should feel personal and considered rather than generic.

Floral centrepieces are always popular and work beautifully when they follow the same palette as the bridal flowers and overall styling scheme. Low, lush arrangements in wooden vessels or terracotta pots suit relaxed, garden-inspired marquee weddings. Tall, dramatic arrangements in glass cylinders or column vases suit more formal celebrations.

Candles add warmth and romance that flowers alone can’t replicate, particularly as the evening progresses. Mixing different heights of pillar candles with votives and tea lights creates a wonderfully intimate atmosphere. Combining flowers and candles on the same table is one of my favourite approaches and gives you the best of both.

Don’t forget the details beyond the centrepiece: the crockery, glassware, linen, napkins and place cards all contribute to the overall look of the table. These smaller elements are where you can really inject personality.

5. How to Use Colour in Your Marquee Decoration

Colour is one of the most powerful tools in marquee decoration and one of the most personal. While soft neutrals and whites are always beautiful, there is something really joyful about a marquee that uses colour confidently, from the flowers and stationery to the crockery, napkins, table runners and furniture.

Lighter colours work particularly well for brightening a marquee interior and making it feel more spacious. If you’re nervous about committing to a bold palette, start with a neutral base and add colour through flowers, ribbons, candles and soft furnishings. This gives you flexibility and keeps the space feeling fresh.

If you do want to go bolder, the key is restraint with the number of colours rather than the intensity. Two or three colours used consistently throughout the marquee will always look more intentional and more beautiful than five or six used inconsistently.

6. How Does Lighting Transform a Marquee Wedding?

Lighting is probably the single most transformative element of marquee decoration and the one that’s most often underestimated until couples see the difference it makes in person.

The great advantage of a marquee is that you control exactly how much natural light comes in. A clear span marquee with full window walls creates a wonderfully light and airy daytime space. A more enclosed structure with strategic window placement can feel intimate and cosy from the start.

As the evening progresses, the lighting does an enormous amount of work. Fairy lights are justifiably popular because they work in almost every setting and create an immediate sense of magic. Scaled up across an entire ceiling they’re genuinely beautiful. Chandeliers add glamour and height. Uplighting on the marquee walls creates warmth and drama. Festoon lighting strung outside around the entrance and between trees brings the celebration into the garden in a really relaxed, beautiful way.

A starry ceiling created by covering a dark cloth with tiny LED lights is one of the most requested marquee lighting effects and for good reason. It creates an incredible atmosphere as the evening progresses and photographs beautifully.

The key thing to plan for is how your lighting will transition from daytime to evening. What looks beautiful at 2pm in natural light can feel quite different at 9pm. Talk this through with your marquee company and lighting supplier early in the planning process so the two work together rather than against each other.

7. How Does Furniture Affect the Look of Your Marquee?

Furniture and layout have a bigger impact on the feel of a marquee than many couples initially realise. The choice of tables, chairs, bar, lounge furniture and how everything is arranged affects how guests move through the space, how comfortable they feel and how the marquee looks overall.

Table shape is a more significant decision than it might seem. Long banqueting tables create a wonderfully communal, convivial feel. Round tables are more traditional and make it easier for larger groups to talk across the table. Square tables work well for smaller, more intimate weddings.

Chairs deserve proper thought. Bentwood chairs are classic and versatile. Ghost chairs add a contemporary feel without competing with the surrounding decoration. Crossback chairs suit relaxed, garden-style celebrations beautifully. Adding cushions, ribbons or florals to chair backs is an easy and effective way to add personality.

A well-designed chill-out area is one of the things that makes a marquee wedding feel genuinely relaxed and generous. A cluster of sofas and low tables, perhaps with a vintage rug and some additional lighting, gives guests somewhere to escape the dance floor and have proper conversations. For a vintage feel, mismatched armchairs sourced from local auctions work beautifully and can often be resold afterwards.

Think about the flow between different areas too. Where do guests arrive? Where do they have drinks? Where do they move for dinner? Where does the evening party happen? A well-thought-through layout makes the whole day feel effortless for guests even if behind the scenes it took a great deal of planning.

Ultimately there is no single right way to decorate a marquee for a wedding. The most important thing is that the decoration feels like you, reflects the atmosphere you want to create and gives your guests a space they feel genuinely welcomed into.

frequently asked questions on marquee decoration

How do I decorate a marquee for a wedding?
Start with a clear styling direction rather than individual elements. Choose a colour palette, decide on the feeling you want to create and make sure every element from the flowers and linen to the lighting and furniture works together cohesively. The most beautiful marquee weddings are ones where everything feels considered and connected.
What are the best marquee decoration ideas?
The most impactful marquee decoration elements are ceiling installations (hanging florals, fairy lights, chandeliers), table centrepieces that combine flowers and candles, considered lighting that transitions well from day to evening, and furniture and layout choices that make the space feel generous and welcoming.
How do I make a marquee look beautiful inside?
Focus on cohesion over quantity. Choose a strong colour palette, invest in good lighting and don’t try to fill every inch of space. A marquee with a clear, confident design direction always looks more beautiful than one where lots of lovely individual elements have been put together without a unifying theme.
What lighting works best in a marquee wedding?
Fairy lights, chandeliers, uplighting and festoon lighting all work beautifully in different ways. A starry ceiling created with tiny LED lights on a dark cloth is one of the most popular and effective options. The key is planning how your lighting will transition from daytime to evening so the two work together rather than against each other.
What flooring is best for a marquee wedding?
It depends on the time of year and the feel you want to create. Hard flooring is essential in cooler or wetter months. Carpet adds warmth and colour. For the dance floor, wooden parquet is versatile and classic, while chequerboard, mirror and LED options make a stronger statement.
How do I make a marquee feel cosy?
Layering is the key. Warm lighting, candles, textured linen, rugs, cushioned chairs and a well-designed chill-out area all contribute to making a marquee feel intimate and welcoming rather than cold and empty. In cooler months, proper heating and carpet flooring make an enormous difference.
Do I need a wedding stylist for a marquee wedding?
Not essential, but very valuable. A wedding stylist with a background in interior design can help you develop a cohesive look, source furniture and accessories, manage the overall design direction and make sure all the individual elements work together beautifully. Find out more about my wedding styling services.
How much does it cost to decorate a marquee for a wedding?
Marquee decoration costs vary hugely depending on your choices. Florals, lighting, furniture hire and any bespoke elements all contribute to the overall budget.
