One of the earliest decisions you’ll make when planning your wedding is where to celebrate. For many couples, the choice comes down to hiring a marquee or booking a traditional wedding venue. Both options offer something wonderful, but they suit different styles, priorities and personalities.
As an experienced marquee wedding planner, I’ve helped countless couples navigate this decision across Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Wiltshire and beyond. Here’s what you really need to know when choosing between a marquee wedding and a traditional venue.

Start with the feeling you want to create
The very first thing I help couples think about is the vibe they want for their day, and what’s realistically possible. If you love the idea of a marquee wedding, that’s wonderful, but do you have space at home or access to land where one could be erected? If not, you might need to look at sites to rent, perhaps a field in your village or nearby countryside.
This conversation naturally leads us to consider traditional wedding venues too. Beyond just the physical space, it’s about asking yourself: do you want something completely personal and bespoke, built essentially just for you? Or would you prefer the ease and polish of a ready-to-go setting?
From there, we explore locations, logistics and budgets for both options. It’s worth knowing upfront that marquees are not necessarily the cheaper choice.

Why couples love marquee weddings
Marquee weddings are brilliant for couples who love design and want to create something entirely their own. You need to embrace the concept of having to bring everything in, and be prepared for lots of design decisions along the way. But the result can range from full luxury in a glass-built marquee structure to a very relaxed, informal celebration.
Common misconceptions About marquee weddings
“Marquees are cheaper”
This is the biggest misconception. Once you factor in marquee hire, power, flooring, lighting, furniture, toilets, staff, catering equipment and possibly extra accommodation, it often costs more than a venue.
“Marquees are only for summer”
With proper heating and insulation, you can absolutely have a beautiful autumn or winter marquee wedding. I’ve worked on a December marquee wedding when it was minus nine degrees outside. The build was challenging, but we kept guests toasty warm inside, and the wedding looked utterly stunning with atmospheric lighting, florals and styling.

The magic of marrying at home
There’s something deeply special about getting married in a space that already holds meaning. Whether it’s your parents’ garden, a field you played in as a child, or your own home, a marquee lets your wedding come to life somewhere already woven into your story.
For families where home has always been the place everyone gathers, it becomes not just a memory bank for the couple, but for all the friends and family involved.
Total design freedom
Planning a marquee wedding at home gives you a blank canvas. You can style everything from floor to ceiling, creating a flow of space that suits you perfectly. You’re not restricted to certain areas. Reception drinks in the orchard, ceremony under the oak tree, dinner in the marquee down the hill—it’s all possible when you control the entire setting.
This freedom extends to timing too. You can open and close your bar when you wish, serve food on your schedule, and dance into the early hours without venue curfews.

When a marquee was perfect
One couple married at the bride’s family home. The groom had grown up abroad with a small family who had sadly all passed away, while the bride had a wonderfully welcoming family. They wanted an at-home ceremony as well as reception, in a garden full of memories for them both.
We created a beautiful marquee celebration that flowed between different areas of the garden for the ceremony, reception drinks and dinner. On the Sunday, more of the garden was used around the swimming pool for a relaxed barbecue, games and swimming. You can see Camilla and Severin’s wedding here.
The case for traditional wedding venues
Traditional venues are a great match for couples who want to lean into what a setting already offers, whether that’s a grand country house, a rustic barn, or a city boutique hotel. The venue’s existing character becomes part of your story.
Built-In practicality
There’s a lot to love about traditional venues, especially when it comes to convenience. You’ll have built-in infrastructure: kitchens, toilets, electricity, heating, air conditioning, running water, parking and covered walkways between areas. Plus experienced on-site staff who know the venue inside out.
There’s simply less to coordinate from the very beginning. The wet weather plan is often much easier too, with dedicated indoor space alongside outdoor areas.
Perfect for certain planning situations
For couples who want a more straightforward planning process, or who live far away from where they’re marrying, a traditional venue can feel like the safer, easier option. If time is tight or you’re planning from a distance, that ready-built structure brings genuine peace of mind.
When a venue made more sense
Elizabeth and Harry loved the countryside and initially considered a marquee. But having previously lived in London, most of their family and friends were still London-based. With a large guest list, they felt it would be logistically easier to celebrate in central London rather than arranging accommodation and transport for everyone to the countryside.
They chose The Berkeley Hotel and loved what the city setting offered for their glamorous celebration.

Marquee vs Wedding Venue: The planning difference
From a planning perspective, it comes down to logistics and thoroughness. A traditional venue comes with a framework already in place. A marquee requires building that framework from the ground up.
With a marquee wedding, I’m coordinating multiple suppliers for infrastructure – power, flooring, kitchen equipment, waste management, toilets, access, security – alongside your traditional suppliers like florist, photographer, caterer and entertainment.
That’s why expert planning is essential for marquee weddings. It takes someone who understands marquees, outdoor construction and complex logistics to manage it all successfully. For couples who love the freedom and are excited about creating something unique and totally theirs, the extra effort is absolutely worth it.
Key questions to consider early
When choosing a wedding venue or planning a marquee wedding, think about:
- Guest numbers – How many people, and can your chosen space comfortably accommodate them?
- Access – For marquees, can large vehicles reach the site? Is the terrain suitable?
- Budget – Be realistic about costs for both options
- Location – Where do most guests live? What makes sense logistically?
- Weather contingency – What’s your backup plan, and does your choice support it?
- Timeline – How much planning time do you have?

Finding the right path for you
Whether you choose a marquee wedding or traditional venue, the right answer is the one that feels authentically yours. A marquee offers freedom, personalisation and the chance to marry somewhere meaningful. A venue provides structure, convenience and a beautiful setting that’s ready to welcome you.
Both can be absolutely magical. The question is which better matches your vision, your priorities and the experience you want to create for yourselves and your guests.
If you’re still undecided, talking it through with an experienced wedding planner can help clarify which direction suits you best. Sometimes it becomes clear very quickly once you start exploring what each option truly involves.
